In honor of the Labor Day Holiday this month we've included a quilt honoring Rosie the Riveter.

The term "Rosie the Riveter" was first used in 1942 in a song of the same name written by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb. The song portrays "Rosie" as a tireless assembly line worker, doing her part to help the American war effort

All the day long,
Whether rain or shine

2010/2011 Fat Quarter Exchange

Definition: A Fat Quarter is a cut piece of fabric which is made by cutting a half yard in half again vertically. The piece is therefore approximately 18″ x 22″.

Bring one to five fat quarters for the theme of the month to the next Guild meeting and enter your name in the drawing for as many fat quarters as you bring.

Educational programs and workshops by quilting teachers and authors enlarge members' knowledge of classic quilt making and history as well as the newest technical innovations in the art of quilting.

Monthly show and tell of work by members --beginners to experts-- inspires and informs.

Blocks of the Month and Block Swap patterns are offered to our members.

Quilt Challenges and Round Robins offer imaginative quilting possibilities.

Pot Luck Suppers are held once or twice a year (always in December) give members the chance for more camaraderie and conversation with other quilters.

Mini Workshops presents a variety of "mini classes" to improve and expand members' quilting skills.

The guild maintains an extensive library of new and classic quilt references. Selections from the extensive library list are available to members to check out and use.

The guild is very active in making Comfort Quilts for community organizations.

Our monthly publication keeps members informed of Guild activities and also presents topics and information of general quilting interest.

Our "Mini Groups" comprised of guild members meet regularly to pursue their individual and group quilting interests.

2010 Quilt in the City Retreat

If you've attended a guild retreat in the past you won't want to miss this one. Those of you that have never been able to make a retreat - THIS IS YOUR CHANCE!

You'll have three days to sew on your projects, start new ones, visit with friends, see what others are working on, get ideas and share information on how you do things. It is a fun time for all. The best thing is that you get to sew all day and then go home to sleep -- if you choose to!

Date: Friday, Sept. 24th at 7:00 pm - Sunday, Sept. 26th at 3:00 pm
Location: 2171 N Fine Avenue, Fresno, CA (map)
Fee: $40 per person (for 3 days of fun!)

Deadline for registration is September 10, 2010

July Workshop: Come Quilt with Jill

Join Jill Schumacher, National Award Winning Quilt Artist, for a fun-filled 2 day workshop. Learn to mark your quilt and prepare it for machine quilting, then actually machine quilt your quilt with the help of Jill’s tips and techniques. Learn how to manage that “Bulk” and make it a fun and rewarding experience to create your heirlooms of tomorrow - all done on your home sewing machine.

Day 1 you will learn the proper way to design and mark your quilting motifs and borders on your completed quilt top.

Day 2 you will actually be able to layer your quilt and prepare it for machine quilting and begin the process of machine quilting your masterpiece.

National Award winning machine quilter, Jill Schumacher began making her first quilt at the age of 12. In 1997 she learned to machine quilt her own work. Her first machine quilt won the Best of Show at the Siskiyou County Fair in 1998 and in 1999, won Second Place in the State Fair. Quilts for Veteran's Hospital

The San Joaquin Valley Quilters Guild (SJVQG) members have made and donated over 60 quilts to the Veteran’s Administration Hospital Community Living Center in Fresno.

The SJVQG was contacted by the Veteran’s Administration in the fall of 2009 with a request to provide 60 bed-sized quilts to remain as furnishings for the Community Living Center in an effort to create a more home-like atmosphere for veterans. The quilts donated were all created by members who provided their own fabric for the quilt tops. No two quilts were created alike. Members with varied quilting skills got involved with the project for piecing the top, quilting the quilt layers, and binding the finished quilts.

A tour of hospital to see the quilts was held at the Veteran’s Community Living Center on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Photos from the tour taken by Anita Freede can be seen by clicking here.

2010/2011 SJVQG Raffle Quilt

SJVQG proudly presents our Opportunity Quilt for 2010/2011.

The quilt, named 'Roses in Bloom' is approximately 80"x80" and includes sampler blocks from the 2008 Winter Patchwork Party by Marti Mitchell.

Guild members donating their time and talent to plan, piece and quilt this years raffle quilt include: Lor Rae Raus, Tanya Good, Lynn Psaltis, Nancy Christian, Pat Baker, Tina Cox and Vicki Young.

2010 Quilt Retreat at Wonder Valley Resort

Join us at Wonder Valley this November 4th through 7th for our annual Quilt Retreat!

Our quilt retreat offers uninterrupted quilting (except for meals!), camaraderie with fellow quilters and opportunities to develop new friendships in a creative atmosphere. This weekend is just for you! Start a new project or finish an old one. We have a spacious sewing room with tables dedicated to cutting and pressing as well as coffee/tea service all day. The sewing room is open until the last person standing turns out the light.

2009 QUILT RETREAT AT WONDER VALLEY

Don't forget! The 2009 Quilt Retreat at Wonder Valley is just days away! November 5-8.

Check in time is at noon on Thursday. Those arriving on Friday will check in at noon also. Our rooms may not be ready until 4 in the afternoon, so just bring your stuff to the sewing room and start having a great time.

On Sunday we need to check out of our rooms by 11:00 AM and be out of the sewing room by 3:00 PM.

June Program: Community Service Workshops & Food Drive

For June, we will be having mini workshops showcasing our various community service projects. These workshops are designed to inspire you to become involved in guild projects which support our community.

The planned workshops include:

"Comfort Quilt How To’s,” by Sue Schara. Our comfort quilt guru will show us everything you need to know to complete a comfort quilt.
“Angel Baby Envelopes,” by Rebecca Wilson. This project provides a lovely keepsake in which mothers who have lost babies before or shortly after birth can place remembrances of their lost child. Rebecca will show us how to make these lovely keepsakes and decorate them with laces, buttons and other embellishments. Check out 'Norma Sews' for a great write-up on how to make Angel Baby Envelopes ( including patterns and pictures).
“Care & Comfort Bags,” by Pamm Kowertz. Want to know how to make those fabric bags for Operation Care & Comfort for the Troops? Pamm will show us how simple they are to make. Use your creativity and make some of these bags to show our service men and women that we appreciate their service to our country. Pat Swofford challenges you to meet (or beat) her goal of 100 bags a month!
“Hope Church Food Drive.” Did you know that Hope Lutheran Church has a food pantry to benefit those in need? This month (and every month) you can bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the food bank. Just place the food items in the collection bins located in the meeting hall.

May Program: Prizes, Potluck & Picking of Brains

This May we will have an Open Forum, to discuss the guild.
Do you have questions about how the guild is run? Do you have suggestions to make it better or an idea for a fun event or fundraiser? Well, this is the time to ask, share, volunteer or (uh hum) complain. Officers and board members will be available, so come prepared to “pick their brains.”

We will also be having a salad and dessert potluck, so get out your best recipes and whip up something yummy to share!

If your last name starts with A to L, bring a salad.
If your last name starts with M to Z, bring a dessert.

We will chow down while brainstorming ideas and suggestions!
Oh, and there will be door prizes too!!

2009/2010 Opportunity Quilt

SJVQG proudly presents our Opportunity Quilt for the 2010 quilt show.

The quilt was donated to the guild by the local chapter of The Applique Society and is based on the 'Monlight Garden' pattern by Julie Popa of Sunflower Hill Designs.

The beautiful fabric for the quilt was donated by Carolyn McCray of Cottage Quilts and the wonderful quilting was done by Rhea Wiens of Quilts by Design.

All applique and piecing for the quilt was done by Rose Boot, Sandy Clark,Tina Cox, Evelyn Hilton, Jill Petrucci, Pat Proudian, Lynn Psaltis, Pat Rosander and Diana Ward.
